As you navigate through the hockey landscape year after year, there’s one question you need to ask yourself at some point. Do your coaches have the same commitment to achieving your dream as you do? In most cases, the answer is no.
This isn’t an article to bash coaches; it’s just an honest reality of the sport. Hockey is a community-based sport with volunteer coaches. The majority of coaches have a limited hockey background, but do the best they can with the resources available.
So, what does this mean to you? If you know where you want to go, you need to invest in your hockey self and find alternative people to help you get there. In addition to practices and games, you need more training from individuals who specialize in one hockey skill set.
In order to play on the top teams season after season – and give yourself the best opportunity to realize your dream – you have to invest in you. This means more work, a bigger commitment, and a passion to get better each week. Find your specialists and become a sponge, taking in everything that these people are passing on to you.
To become an elite player, you need to be really good at everything, but great in at least one area of hockey. For some, their greatness comes in scoring goals. For others, it may be making highlight-reel passes or having a knack for the physical side of the game. Determine what you are best at, practice it more than anyone else, and be the best!!
