Ice Hockey Tips and Hockey Skills: Making a Perfect Saucer Pass

There are hundreds of ice hockey drills that involve passing, but very few are designed to work on mastering the saucer pass.  Here are a few tips on how to make a proper saucer pass.

The saucer pass is a passing technique used in ice hockey where one player elevates the puck off the ice, through the air, to another player.   The goal is to get the puck off the ice and over a defenders stick or body.

So, how do you make a saucer pass?

There are two types of saucer passes; the forehand or backhand, and both share the same technique.

1. Position the puck at the heel of the blade.

2. The key to making a flat saucer pass so that it’s not wobbling in the air is to get the puck spinning.  You do this by pulling your stick blade in, toward the front of your body, having the puck go from the heel to the toe of the blade.

3. At the last second, before you release the pass, there’s a quick flick of the wrist, which elevates the puck off the ice.

Here is a short video that shows the basics of how to saucer pass.

Practice and master the saucer pass off-ice and see your on-ice creativity and play making ability make you a better hockey player.
